It Locates in southwest Shanghai, Qingpu, one of the city’s districts, is the west gate and backyard of the city (40 km from downtown Shanghai), bordering Jiangsu and Zhejiang. It has an area of 677.8 square kilometers. With a plain topography, sophisticated river network, and abundant production, it is a rich land in the southern part of the Yangtze River. The only freshwater lake of Shanghai, Dianshan Lake, is located in Qingpu. Though Qingpu was settled hundreds of years earlier than Shanghai, it is more famous for its natural waterways, which have been used as a mode of transportation for centuries.
Qingpu is the origin of Shanghai culture, with a long history and strong cultural background. It is renowned for the “Songze Culture” six thousand years ago, when the matriarchal society changed to the patriarchal society in Neolithic Period. It is so named because it was first discovered in Songze Village. Therefore, there are quite a few archeological sites and historical monuments there, including Songze Ancient Culture Ruins; Fuquanshan Ancient Culture Ruins; Blue Dragon Pagoda in Tang Dynasty; Puji Bridge in Song Dynasty; Yinxiang Bridge in Yuan Dynasty; and Qushui Garden in Qing Dynasty.
Qingpu is famous not only for its beautiful scenery, but also for its gorgeous humane view. There are numerous entertainment facilities in Qingpu, such as the Grand View Garden, the Sun Island, Oriental Green Boat, rural golf club, Dianshan Lake yacht, and horsemanship stadium.
Qingpu field songs and Shanghai Gu Embroidery were both recognized as folk arts to be protected.
